How to Choose Your First Leather Jacket
Shoulders, sleeves, hide and hardware — the four checks that separate a decade jacket from a two-season one.
A good leather jacket is a ten-year relationship, so fit is everything. Shoulders should sit exactly on your own, sleeves should kiss the wrist bone, and the body should skim — never billow. If you plan to layer knits underneath, size with your thickest sweater on.
Next, choose your hide. Cowhide is rugged and moulds slowly to your frame; lambskin is supple from day one but asks for gentler treatment. For a first jacket, an oil-tanned cowhide trucker is the most forgiving all-rounder in our workshop.
Finally, check the details that separate a decade jacket from a two-season one: metal zips, reinforced pocket corners, a lining you can replace, and seams stitched at 7+ per inch. Every Rivetwood jacket ticks all four — and our repair bench will keep it ticking for years.
